In computing hosting is defined (from to host) a service that consists of allocating on a web server pages of a website, making it accessible from the Internet. |
Such a "web server", defined as "host" is connected to the Internet in ways appropriate to ensure access to the pages of the site through the browser, with identification of contents through the domain and IP address.
The provision of connection services to the Internet, hosting, housing, and related services, today is a very specific economic sector in which they operate many national realities, but also large transnational corporations.
Types
There is a great range of offers, depending on the use you want to make of the website.
A typical service, for a static site, may include, inter alia:
* Registration or transfer of a domain name;
* One to endless e-mail addresses, associated with different mailboxes (POP3) or a single (aka e-mail);
* Spam filters and anti-virus;
* A certain amount of web space;
* Appropriate tools for the management of the pages, such as file manager, prototypes, ftp, access counters, etc..;
* An amount of monthly bandwidth for the traffic generated by the site properly.
A typical service, to a dynamic site may include, in addition to the above:
* Support to one or more scripting languages, such as PHP, Python, or ASP;
* The support to an online database, such as MySQL or Postgres;
* Services statistics and traffic analysis, such as the free software Webalizer;
The hosting also differs according to the type of space that is made available:
* A dedicated server (or a web server that hosts a single website);
* A shared server (hosting a number of sites on the same server).
The spaces are sold on a shared server can be divisible or less depending on allow to host a single domain or multiple domains.
As for the monthly bandwidth provision, some offerings of bands provide unlimited web space.
The hosting also differs depending on the platform, the operating system that is installed on the server: Windows or Linux.
